About
Friend of a Friend is a yearly gathering that brings together a group of individuals, all connected by mutual friends but who do not know each other yet. These individuals, artists and writers, spend 5 days sharing their practice, leading workshops for the group, and living and cooking together. The goal is to build new friendships that will create new lasting colleagues.
The beginnings
Friend of a Friend started in 2022 with Hyeree Ro and Armando Cortés each inviting their friends to Austin, Texas. Hyeree was based in Seoul, Armando in Los Angeles before they met at Yale School of Art. These two who were engaged in respective art scenes invited colleagues whose work they believe in. Artists and writers from Seoul, Los Angeles, New York, Ann Arbor, and New Haven were gathered at the same time in Austin, Texas.
The gathering
A friend of a friend is a stranger you’ve never met, but they are not a total stranger either. We share a friend who we know and trust. We are curious what this condition will bring to the temporal space we gather at. The practice we lead, the works we craft, the food we love to cook, the know-hows we accumulated, and the stories we collected: hopefully they will be shared during the short time we gather together. Though it may be a brief time, we look forward to its potential for real talks to happen and possible future projects.
-
Pecha Kucha
A short presentation by each participant introducing us to their work and practice.
-
Workshops
Each participant leads the group through a workshop that somehow relates to their practice.
-
Future Projects
A time for planning viable small projects for the near future. The aim is to create concrete project plans that can be realized. After a condensed time spent together, how do we continue conversations and engagement with one another?
